Manchester United have promised Anthony Martial that he will play as a centre forward next season, according to reports in France.

Martial has mainly been used out wide since joining the Red Devils back in 2015 but the 22-year-old is desperate to be handed more regular game-time through the middle under Jose Mourinho.

The Frenchman’s frustrations have led to him being linked with a move away from Old Trafford, with both Arsenal, Chelsea and Juventus lining up offers ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to French outlet RMC, United are desperate to keep hold of Martial and have assured him that he will play as a central striker next season. However, it’s claimed this promise is unlikely to convince the France international to stay put.

Asked about the rumours linking Chelsea with Martial, Antonio Conte replied:

‘I think this is not the right moment to speak about this. ‘I don’t like to talk about players of other teams this is disrespectful for the players other players and the other club. ‘Our focus is to finish in the best possible way.’

An injury to Romelu Lukaku meant Martial got the chance to play through the middle against Brighton on Friday night but Mourinho was unimpressed with the Frenchman’s display.

‘The players who replaced others didn’t perform at a good level and when individuals don’t perform at a good level it’s difficult for the team to play at good level,’ Mourinho told Sky Sports.

‘And now maybe you understand why some players play more than other and you won’t ask all the time why A, B and C don’t play more.

‘I wouldn’t say disappointed, because I know them. I thought for some the possibility to start a game, to give reason to the ones who criticise my choices. ‘

”Why always Lukaku?” Now you have your answer to “Why always Lukaku?” We are not as good as individually as people think we are.’
