Bayern vs Arsenal Player rating! Coquelin worse than Iwobi

Arsenal‘s Champions League hopes are in tatters after a first-leg 5-1 thrashing at the hands Bayern Munich.

The German giants started brightly at the Allianz Arena and took a well-deserved lead after just 11 minutes.

Arjen Robben was given time and space on the edge of the box and the Dutch star found the top corner with one of his infamous curled strikes.

After a period of substantial pressure the Gunners were handed a lifeline when Laurent Koscielny was caught in the box by Robert Lewandowski.

Alexis Sanchez saw his initial effort from the spot saved by Manuel Neuer, but the Chilean’s blushes were saved as he was able to fire home the rebound.

Arsene Wenger’s side appeared revitalised after levelling – Granit Xhaka wasting a fine chance to put the visitors ahead before under-fire Mesut Ozil was denied by Neuer.

But any momentum Arsenal had disappeared at the break, with Lewandowski restoring the hosts’ lead with a fantastic header from Philipp Lahm’s perfectly weighted cross.

Koscielny was forced off just minutes before Lewandowski’s goal and his absence was exposed again as Thiago Alcantara scored Bayern’s third to secure the win.

With away goals still to play for Wenger would have be looking for a response from his side, but the Premier League outfit were unable to contain the hosts.

Bayern’s fourth came with 30 minutes still remaining – Arsenal appeared to deal with a corner but Thiago’s strike from outside the box deflected off Xhaka and past Ospina.

The Gunners’ misery was compounded late on as substitute Thomas Muller fired home to complete a remarkable second-half performance from Bayern.
