Although all Arsenal fans are more interested in signing a striker signed for the club by Wenger, a look at Arsenal’s squad will show you we still need a centre back. But according to the Mirror, West London club Chelsea has beaten off competition from London rivals Arsenal to secure the £30m signing of Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegalese has been linked with a move to Arsenal and is said to be the primary target for this summer in the centre back position.
The Senegalese international joined Serie A side Napoli from Racing Genk in the summer of 2014 and has developed in to one of the best centre-backs in Italy over the past two years with his solid performances at centre back helping Napoli finish second behind eventual champions Juventus last season.
Koulibaly’s sensational form led to interest from the English Premier League with British tabloid claiming that London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea were among the clubs battling over his signature this summer transfer window.
The Mirror suggest that the West London club will wrap-up a £30m deal once Koulibaly agrees a severance package with Napoli so it looks as though new Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is set to complete his first major signing of the summer.
The latest development will come as a huge blow to London rivals Arsenal as Wenger needs to bring in a solid defensive partner for Laurent Koscielny as neither Per Mertesacker nor Gabriel has been convincing and Koulibaly would have fitted the bill perfectly.
