If reports this morning are to be believed, Arsenal is close to the signing of long term target Matthias Ginter from German club Freiburg. It is believed that the versatile defender who has been rumoured as a target for Wenger for a while now is close to joining the gunners in a deal worth £6.1m. The sun newspaper ( UK ) are reporting that Wenger is keen to complete the signing of the 19 year old German this week.
Ginter was first linked to Arsenal this summer when Arsenal sent French defensive midfielder Francis Coquelin to Freiburg. It was thought back then that Arsenal was considering making Coqelin’s move to Freiburg as makeshift to sign Matthias Ginter.
The exciting thing about Ginter is the fact that he will not only be an option for the Gunners in the centre of defense but can as well help in the defensive midfield role when called upon. Another plus is the fact that he is fairly young and won’t be hasty when it comes to first team action.
If it happens, Ginter’s signing is likely to put paid to Arsenal’s pursuit of Swansea and Wales’ captain Ashley Williams.
