The 19-year-old midfielder went to close down the England international as he wormed his way into the area, but failed to prevent him from getting a shot away.
Sterling’s strike found its target, putting Manchester City ahead at the Emirates, and Hector Bellerin and Shkodran Mustafi could immediately be seen pointing fingers at Guendouzi.
The youngster was a surprise starter for the match against last season’s Premier League champions, and despite his error for the goal, demonstrated why Unai Emery was so keen to sign him for Arsenal.
Emery knew about the youngster from his time managing in France, and looks to have completed a shrewd bit of business in signing him for just £6million.
Throughout Sunday’s fixture the teenager looked energetic, intelligent and willing to get on the ball – he wasn’t overawed by the occasion, or put off by his earlier mistake.
Speaking about the midfielder on Match of the Day, Martin Keown said: “Guendouzi the 19-year-old was playing in there and I thought he was quite brave.
“Things didn’t go well for him at times but he showed a good energy. He showed that he really had that character and he didn’t hide.
“But patience is going to be the key after 22 years of Arsene Wenger. They used to pass the ball out from the back, but not to the extent that they did today.”
