Arsenal scouts are watching Caglar Soyuncu over the international break, with talks over his future planned for next week.
Turkish-Football.com reports that representatives from the club went to watch the centre-back playing in his country’s 2-1 win over Iran on Monday. The Turkish outlet expects them to attend Friday night’s match against Tunisia as well.
Soyuncu will reportedly hold talks over a move after Turkey’s final game of the break, against Russia next Tuesday.
He said as much recently, telling the media: “One of the biggest clubs in England, Arsenal, are interested but it is not a done deal yet. I am going to play the international games first and then we will make a decision, I will hold further talks afterwards.”
The 22-year-old currently plays for SC Freiburg, after joining the Bundesliga club in 2016. He still has a contract there until 2021, but based on Freiburg’s 15th-place finish last season, they may want to cash in and reinvest if they want to avoid relegation next year.
Then again, they looked a lot worse whenever Soyuncu wasn’t in the team in 2016/17. The defender only missed eight league games all season, but Freiburg conceded three goals or more in four of those matches. That’s compared to just five times in 26 games when he was in the team.
The club are reportedly asking for around £35m for the defender, which shouldn’t be completely unreasonable for Arsenal, despite their budget constraints. We’ll see how things pan out in the coming weeks.
