Arsenal are paying the price for not beefing up the squad in the winter window. not only are we stretched in attack, we seems stretched in defence too. Arsenal’s influential centre back Laurent Koscielny picked up a calf problem against Chelsea and has now been replaced by a rookie from the reserves.
Arsenal youngster Hector Bellerin has been included in the Gunners squad that will tackle Swansea tomorrow. The former Barca youth player was called into the squad as a replacement for injured French centre back Laurent Koscielny.
Ballerin is an attacking right-back and made his first team debut in the League Cup this season against West Brom before spending two months on loan at Championship side Watford in November. But what sense does it make replacing a centre-back with a young right back?
I think I have an idea what Wenger is up to. Probably he wants to play Sagna as a centre back tomorrow against Swansea and that means Vermaelen would sit on the bench while Jenkinson would replace the Frenchman on the right side of defence with Ballerin acting as the back up to him on the bench.
I know that would be a surprise as a lot of people would expect Vermaelen to work straight into the team to play alongside Mertesacker at the heart of Arsenal’s defence but that would also mean no center back on the bench and that is a big risk in the event of injury or red card. Having Vermaelen start on the bench tomorrow doesn’t mean he isn’t rated, it is just the price to pay for the success of the team.
