There are reports doing the round that claim Arsenal have entered the race to sign Anzhi Makhachkala striker Samuel Eto’o.
The Russian club have filed for bankruptcy and have placed their entire squad on the transfer list as a result. The Russian club contains starts such as Lassana Diarra, Willian, Yuri Zhirkov and Samuel Eto’o with the Gunners seemingly interested in the Cameroon legend.
Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo claimed Arsenal have made their interest known stating ‘On Thursday there has been an added bid of Arsenal on the one hand, and Napoli and said Inter Milan, on the other.’
‘Arsenal had longed for former Barcelona striker before and after the decision by his club they dream of being able to take the attacker to the Emirates Stadium.’
The deal is complicated for many reasons. Eto’o is a household name and has a devastating reputation but at 32, his best years are behind him. He has been playing in the Russian league for two years and although he managed 21 goals last year, his ability in a higher standard league is likely to weak. There will no doubt be competition to sign the striker but his wages may also be a stumbling block.
He is currently the world’s highest paid footballer but no other club will be willing to fork out £350,000-a-week on a 32-year old striker. Even half of that amount would be too far and in Arsenal case, a wage of quarter his current salary would still be their maximum offer. In fact the simplest part of this transfer will be the transfer fee with Anzhi looking to bring in as much money as possible.
Zhirkov would be a player worth looking at.
