Sol Campbell has confirmed that he’ll join up with the England u21s to work alongside Aidy Boothroyd for a couple of upcoming international matches.
If you’ve been following Daily Cannon for a while, you’ll already know that Campbell is on the search for a job in coaching or management.
He talks about it regularly, from saying in January that he’d ‘crawl’ back to Arsenal to be given a coaching chance, to describing himself as ‘one of the greatest minds in football’ after subsequently being turned down by Oxford United. Now, finally, it looks like he might be getting a chance to get started.
“I’ve been asked to go and work with Aidy (Boothroyd) for the (u21) friendlies and I’ve accepted that,” Campbell said (via The S*n). “We’ll look and see what happens but it’s great to be involved.”
England have a couple of UEFA u21 Championship Qualifiers next week, but the suggestion is that it’ll be the two friendlies afterwards that Campbell helps out with. He’s been invited to work with the squad for the next international break, between the 12th and 20th November.
At this stage, neither of the matches have been completely confirmed, so we don’t know England’s opponents yet.
If Campbell’s time with the young side goes well, perhaps he’ll get a more permanent role in the England setup. We’ll have to wait and see, but at least the former centre-back is making some progress.
