Arsenal have identified Porto captain Hector Herrera as a replacement for the departing Aaron Ramsey, according to reports.
Herrera impressed for Mexico during the World Cup, and is believed to be on a shortlist drawn up by Gunners boss Unai Emery.
Arsenal were hopeful of tying Ramsey down to a new deal, what with his contract set to expire in the summer, but the agency representing the player confirmed he will be leaving.
Avid Sports & Entertainment Group made it clear on social media – in tweets that have now been deleted – that Ramsey has no future at the club.
One tweet read: “There is nothing we can do… the club made a decision.” While another stated: “He didn’t want to leave, but now there is no other option.”
Herrera started his career in Mexico with Pachuca before moving to the Portuguese capital, where he worked his way up the ranks at the Estadio do Dragao.
According to the Evening Standard, the box to box midfielder is being monitored by the north London club, who could be forced to move for him as soon as January.
As things stand Ramsey can leave Arsenal on a free in the summer, and the Gunners would rather recoup some cash for him before he walks away on a Bosman.
