Arsenal have been handed a major boost as star target Max Meyer has reportedly decided against joining Hoffenheim.
The Schalke and German star is one of the most coveted young midfielders in Europe, and is set to be available on a free transfer next month.
Meyer and Schalke were unable to come to terms over a new deal and several clubs are lining up to sign the 22-year-old.
Liverpool and Arsenal have been tracking Meyer for several years, with Jurgen Klopp believed to have kept his eye on the youngster since his days as Borussia Dortmund manager.
Klopp has continued to monitor Meyer as Liverpool’s boss, but Calciomercato claim AC Milan are set to win the race to sign the Germany international.
Meyer was close to joining Hoffenheim, but has opted to put that switch on the backburner and concentrate on Milan, Arsenal or Liverpool .
A move to Italy would be a shock, considering the Premier League interest in Meyer and the fact Hoffenheim seemed to have a deal wrapped up.
Meyer’s agent Fabio Parisi is the driving force behind the move out of Germany and contact between the player’s camp and suitors outside Bundesliga was made in the past days.
Parisi has suggested a salary of £4million a year and suitors are expected to issue their counter-off in the next week.
The persistent transfer speculation surrounding Meyer affected his form at Schalke and he was suspended by the club in April for criticising sporting director Christian Heidel.
Meyer did not feature in Schalke’s final games of the season and will be officially a free agent on June 30.
