According to The Sun, a “gentleman’s agreement” could still see Everton’s Idrissa Gueye sign for Arsenal next summer.
That’s despite the 28 year-old on the cusp of signing a new deal with Everton, which will keep him at the club until 2022.
Gueye is suggested to have a new bumper deal set to see him earn £4m-per-year. However, the gentleman’s agreement with the Toffees will allow him to sign for a Champions League team if they make an approach.
Arsenal are the main club to have been linked with the defensive midfielder who could potentially fall under this bracket. Though at this point in time, a lack of Champions League football means time the Gunners are not eligible suitors.
The Senegal international only joined Ronald Koeman’s side in 2016 after spending a season with Aston Villa but has impressed during his short stint on Merseyside.
This season, Gueye’s already made 11 appearances across all competitions, including a goal in a Europa League qualifier against Hajduk Split.
Everton paid a reported £7.1m (his release clause) for the ex-Lille man, though it is expected that Arsene Wenger’s side will have to cough up considerably more.
