Arsenal Centre Back Undecided About Future

Club captain Thomas Vermaelen has revealed that his Arsenal future remains uncertain. The Belgian has fallen down the pecking order and now acts as back-up to first choice center backs Mertesacker and Koscielny. This has made first team football a rarity for him and this has led him been linked with moves away from the club. The former Ajax captain has been linked with a move to Premier League outfit Manchester United and Serie A spenders Napoli.

Vermaelen has bored out his mind on the current situation at the Emirates vis a vis his contract.

“I do occasionally have the chance to play, but you must remember that the players in front of me are incredibly fit and play almost all the time,” he told the press in Belgium.

“Of course I was hoping for more playing time.”

The Belgian has just under 18 months to run on his contract but he says he does not know where he will be after that.

“I do not know [whether I will sign a new contract],” he added.

“We’ll see at the end of the season. We are very much in the title race and have a chance of winning the FA Cup. My future is currently not on the agenda.

“These are worries for later.”

I quite agree with Vermaelen. He is at an age where he needs to play regularly while Arsenal is at a point where they need to put form over name and also need to evaluate his contract situation. If he is not renewing his contract, then they should cash in on him. it stands to be seen if he would renew it but for now, he claims that he wants to be focused on the on-field situation rather than contract talks. I agree contract talks could be a distraction. What Arsenal need is full focus on the season run-in. Will he sign a new contract? I believe Wenger can convince him to by allowing him play a prominent role in the season run-in.
