Former Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires believes Mesut Özil can help Arsenal with the Premier League. The Frenchman has been training with the club this season and has been impressed with the club’s record signing, believing he can push the Gunners on to a whole new level.
“It’s now possible for Arsenal to win as they young players have grown up and have more experience.”
“They also have a good mix for Wenger. If you put Özil in the middle, I think it’s a very good mix for Arsenal.”
Pires feels the club were always good but Özil’s arrival has made them one of the best teams in the league.
“Özil’s a very good player, he players for the German national team, he played for Real Madrid, now he’s playing for Arsenal.”
Although Pires is confident Arsenal can lift the Premier League, he feels the Champions League is a step too far for them at the moment.
“Seriously, I think Arsenal have got the potential to win the Premier League.”
“But the Champions League, I don’t know.”
“The most important thing is to focus on the league because it is very important for the club and for the fans.”
The club have never won the Champions League but came close in 2006, beaten by two late Barcelona goals. The Arsenal’s last Premier League success was a decade ago with the ‘Invincibles’, an achievement the current side cannot match following the opening day loss to Aston Villa but have showed they are more than good enough to win the league so far.
The Gunners are currently eight years without a trophy but Mesut Özil could inspire them to finally end their torrid trophyless run. The early signs show he could do just that with a couple of dazzling displays capped off a with a goal against Napoli.
