Arsenal’s search for a defender led them to Italy over the summer. Reports have emerged that the Gunners inquired about Juventus defender Martin Caceres but the approach was swiftly rejected by the Serie A champions.
The Gunners are noticeably thin at the back with Laurent Koscielny, Per Mertesacker and Thomas Vermaelen as the only senior central defenders. Injury to the latter saw the squad worryingly thing in that area which forced Arsene Wenger to merge Sagna in to a centre-back while he searched for the ideal recruit.
Ashley Williams and Micah Richards were being linked with moves to Arsenal daily but it was Caceres that Wenger was more interested in signing. Antonio Conte made his stance very clear that Caceres was in no way for sale and so Arsenal dropped their pursuit of the Uruguayan however their interest in the 26-year old remains.
Arsenal’s summer nemesis Napoli, were also interested in the defender but Juventus had no willingness to negotiate with any club. Rafa Benitez’s side had already pipped Arsenal to the signing of Gonzalo Higuain and were in direct competition to sign Julio Cesar and Luiz Gustavo. Cesar stayed at QPR while Gustavo transferred to Wolfsburg.
