Arsenal and Liverpool are among the clubs to have expressed their interest in signing Atletico Madrid’s £87.5m goalkeeper Jan Oblak this summer, according to a report in the Mirror.
Oblak has been one of the best keepers in world football since joining Atletico from Benfica in 2014 and he’s conceded just 18 goals in 34 La Liga appearances so far this season.
The 25-year-old has also registered an impressive 26 clean sheets to help keep Atletico second in the table behind Barcelona while they are through to the semi-finals of the Europa League.
The Slovenian international’s outstanding form has caught the eye of clubs here in the Premier League as the Mirror are citing a report from AS that claims Arsenal and Liverpool have expressed their interest in signing Oblak this summer.
The Gunners need to find a long-term replacement for Petr Cech as the 35-year-old’s form has deteriorated this season and it seems Arsenal are eyeing an ambitious swoop for the Atletico stopper.
Liverpool are also expected to be in the market for a new keeper this summer as Simon Mignolet is set to leave after falling out-of-favour and Jurgen Klopp is also lining-up a move for Oblak.
However, he won’t come cheap as the Mirror claim his buyout clause is set at £87.5m [€100m] and Atletico are likely to demand the full value of that figure as Oblak still has three-years left on his contract.
It remains to be seen whether Arsenal or Liverpool are willing to pay that kind of money but even if they are, the England giants face competition from abroad as the report from Spain says PSG and Juventus are also in the race to sign Oblak this summer.
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop but there’s no doubt Oblak would be a sensational signing for Arsenal or Liverpool if either club was able to lure him to the Premier League.
