Dietmar Hamann has issued a warning to Arsenal fans that Mesut Özil’s arrival does not guarantee a title challenge.
The German believes the club did brilliantly to sign Özil, labeling him one of the best players in Europe, but still doesn’t believe the squad is capable of competing at the top.
“With the pace of Walcott, the trickery of Cazorla, the physicality of Giroud, [Özil] will create a lot of chances for Arsenal and I think he’s a top, top signing.”
“Whether it’s enough for them to challenge for the title, I’m not too sure, but it certainly is a step in the right direction.”
Ozil is a fantastic addition at Arsenal and he will improve the club but a few more signings are required to transform the Gunners in to title contenders.”
“I think he is a fantastic player, I think he’s a fantastic signing for Arsenal – I think he’ll improve the team no end. He has more assists over the last four or five years than any other player in Europe and he can create and score a goal out of nothing – and I don’t think there are too many players of that calibre.”
Arsenal have always been a strong attacking team but have often been criticised with their defence, a position they failed to strengthen this summer. A successful season is normally backed by a strong defensive unit and that needs to be addressed before Wenger can think of challenging for the title.
