Arsenal And Manchester City To Battle For Free Agent Spanish – Reports

Soccer - Barclays Premier League - Fulham v Arsenal - Craven Cottage

The summer window has slammed shut but the rumour mill is still wide open and Arsenal are still been linked with litany of players; experienced and youngsters. The latest been Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. According to Sport, Arsenal and City have made contact with Valdes’ camp to register their interest with the Spain international.

Valdes is in the last year of his Barcelona contract and has already declared that he won’t be renewing as he seeks a fresh challenge away from Nou Camp and the La Liga. Harmed with that information, the rumour mill have started hawking him around Europe. Monaco were quoted with interest in the summer.

Arsenal hunted for a goalkeeper in the summer window and ended with Emiliano Viviano who signed on loan from Palermo albeit with an option of a permanent buy in the summer. With that development, I doubt if Arsenal will be hunting for another goalkeeper in the summer though the prospect of landing a highly experienced goalkeeper and one that has enjoyed a trophy laden career at Barcelona for free might interest Wenger but the prospect of having to pay over 100k Pounds per week for Valdes might also discourage him. If Valdes is coming for free because he ran down his contract means he won’t settle for peanuts in wages.

City are also interested in a new goalkeeper after the seeming drop in form of Joe Hart. Well, they could get him because they have the money to spend. They can afford to pay him over 100k Pounds in wages since they have been able to move on some of their big earners; Balotelli, Tevez and Kolo Toure. My take is simple, Arsenal don’t need a new goalkeeper and even if we do, it shouldn’t be Valdes when a brilliant goalkeeper like Iker Casillas could be available.

But for now, I believe we don’t need a new goalkeeper, Szczesny has been brilliant this season and even the new goalkeeper we acquired on loan has not even made our bench so far this season. Before we can say whether or not we need a new goalkeeper, we should wait till the end of the season and see how our current goalkeepers are faring before thinking of shipping out some to bring in another.
