Arsenal have reportedly moved into the race for the signing of one of the Premier League’s leading midfielders.
Unlike the other top Premier League clubs, Arsenal have not had a quiet January transfer window as they have signed Cohen Bramall so far.
Arsenal’s failed moves for Riyad Mahrez and more recently Julian Draxler, have signaled Arsene Wenger’s interest in the acquisition of another attacking midfielder.
And according to Metro, Arsene Wenger has now made an initial approach over a deal for want-away West Ham star Dimitri Payet.
The report claims that Manchester United have also made an enquiry for the midfielder with the Hammers asking for a $36.8 million (£30 million) fee.
With the future of Mesut Ozil still unresolved, Payet could be recruited as a cheaper replacement for the Germany international who has faced criticism in recent weeks over his performances.
In an interview from last month, the Frenchman indirectly admitted that he would prefer a move to the Emirates stadium.
“I read that Wenger considers me the missing piece of the Arsenal’s game, but he’s never told me that!” Payet told RMC.
“We conceded five or six at home against them. When you see them playing, as a technical player, you could only have fun in that team. They’re candidates for the title every year.”
