Eddie Nketiah has shed light on how he became an Arsenal player.
The 18-year-old was the hero on Tuesday as came off the bench and bagged two goals against Norwich. It was his home debut for the club he signed for just two years ago. Nketiah was at Chelsea until he was told he wouldn’t be offered scholarship terms.
Two days later, Arsenal offered him a trial. He’s been in the youth teams since, scoring plenty of goals and impressing Arsene Wenger. “The day Arsenal showed interest in me was one the happiest days I can remember,” he said, as reported by the Metro.
“It wasn’t only because I’ve always been an Arsenal fan, but two days earlier I was told I’d be released by Chelsea and would not earn a scholarship for the next season. I was so down but then Arsenal found out I was available.”
Arsenal had been struggling for most of the League Cup match against Norwich, having conceded a first-half goal to Josh Murphy.
Late in the second half, Wenger brought on Nketiah for Reiss Nelson. Seconds later, he scored the equaliser and forced the game to extra-time. Five minutes into extra-time, he scored his second of the match. It proved to be the winning goal.
His impact will undoubtedly lead to more first-team chances in the immediate future. The 18-year-old has been a part of every matchday squad for the Carabao Cup and Europa League this season, and will have another opportunity to shine when Arsenal play Red Star Belgrade next Thursday.
