Team Talk have reported on Monday that Newcastle United are willing to sign Arsenal forward Danny Welbeck this summer.
The report claims that the England international is not wanted by Gunners boss Unai Emery and that Newcastle will offer him an escape route.
It also states that the Magpies are willing to pay him around £100,000 to join – but it would be a terrible signing by United manager Rafael Benitez.
Welbeck, who has 41 Premier League goals in 198 games for Arsenal and Manchester United, is a decent player, but he isn’t the next-level quality that Benitez really should be looking for.
Plus, if he signs a three-year deal at Newcastle then that is a £15 million commitment in salary alone and, with the North Londoners rating him at around £15 million [Goal.com], that’s a whopping £30 million investment.
His goal return doesn’t indicate that he is worth such a hefty outlay, but then there’s his injuries.
Since joining from the Red Devils in 2014, the 27-year-old has only managed 80 Premier League games for Arsenal.
Again, it’s a decent amount but by the same token it also illustrates that he has missed a lot of football through injury and, given the numbers involved, Newcastle would be crazy to push through with it.
Not only is Welbeck not good enough to fire Benitez’s side to the next level, history suggests that he may not even be fit enough.
