Arsenal may yet to switch their attentions to Alexandre Lacazette if they are frustrated in their pursuit of Kylian Mbappe.
The latest news from Spain paints a bleak picture for the Gunners’ hopes of prising Mbappe from Monaco, with Real Madrid the frontrunners in the race for his signature.
It means Arsene Wenger could revisit interest in Lyon striker Lacazette, who would command a fee in the region of £60m.
Lacazette was a target for Arsenal last summer but Wenger did not follow up on his initial interest, leaving the French striker frustrated as the Gunners boss eventually settled on Deportivo la Coruna forward Lucas Perez.
But with that move failing and Arsenal still requiring a new No.9, Lacazette could yet become the top target for Wenger during the close season as hopes of a move for Mbappe fade.
Lacazette had initially prioritised a move to Atletico Madrid to link up with close friend and French international teammate Antoine Griezmann but the La Liga side’s transfer ban being upheld has disrupted a potential transfer to Spain.
Here’s what Lacazette has said on his future so far this summer.
“I think that’s the right time. I want to discover something else, and to play at a different level,” he told L’Equipe in May.
“I know very well that on a European scale I am not yet well recognised. I want to see if I can answer the questions that people are asking, and to make further progress.”
