The Gunners have long-standing interest in Nice midfielder Jean Michael Seri, but any move for the Ivorian has been delayed until after Arsenal have offloaded a few of their excess midfielders.
Wenger currently has Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Santi Cazorla, Granit Xhaka, Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny competing for just two central midfield spots.
And French publication L’Equipe report that, while Arsenal are keen to add £33m-rated Seri to their ranks this summer, they have yet to begin negotiations with Nice.
First, they must try and trim an area of the squad that is possessed of quantity but has little quality, with three players in particular facing the chop.
Elneny is proving difficult to shift, having rejected a £10m move to Leicester City, while there have been no concrete offers for Coquelin despite the Frenchman being surplus to requirements.
Wilshere had long been linked with West Ham before rumours surfaced of a surprise move abroad to either Sampdoria or, incredibly, Turkish side Antalyaspor.
For now, Seri is happy to wait for Arsenal’s offer, with Tottenham yet to lodge a formal bid despite being interested, and Swansea’s £15m bid far below their asking price.
The midfielder has shown no signs of allowing his form to dip for Nice and has remained as committed as ever in training and pre-season matches.
Seri made the Ligue 1 Team of the Year last season in a storming campaign for the French minnows, qualifying for the Champions League play-offs, as he scored seven goals and laid on nine assists.
