As we’ve witnessed this season, consistency, especially in the attacking third has been a worry. With a lack of creativity stunting our progress and limiting our chances of scoring decisive goals. Something had to be done.
Enter Clement Grenier. Lyon’s bright spark and primary creator. With 6 assists and 7 goals and 20 out of 28 Ligue 1 games started, Wenger has earmarked him to add fuel to our dwindling creative fire. A signing to strengthen our creative and attacking options. At times going forward we looked fatigued and out of ideas, and with Wilshere constantly on the mend, creativeness has been hard to come by on a regular basis.
Most Gooners will be and have been saying “Grenier who?”. But having witnessed the 22 year old in action, he could well be the key to unlocking the door to success that we’ve all been searching for. He has been the driving force behind Lyon’s Champions League qualification and has been called up to the French National team for the upcoming friendlies.
At only 22 years old he surely has a successful career ahead of him. I’m not saying he should be thrown directly into the starting line up or that he is the saviour. The point I’m trying to get across is that when the team is flatlining, Grenier can be called upon to find that decisive pass and speed the tempo up when we’re lagging.
Grenier is exactly the type of player we need who can be called upon to slot into the midfield when injuries hit and to play his part off the bench and create the spark to ignite our attack. This is not a step backward for Arsenal, this is quality in depth that we’ve been craving for over last few seasons.
Strengthening the squad for the upcoming season is vital for Arsenal to mount any serious challenge for silverware. There will be more signings to come before the start of the season to add depth on the squad as a whole and especially addressing our Centre Forward situation. Wenger is looking to turn Arsenal from a ‘good’ team to a ‘great’ team and wake the club up from its 8 year slumber.
