MESUT OZIL is angry at Arsenal because they failed to build a title-contending squad in the summer, according to Robert Pires
Mesut Ozil is yet to agree a new deal at Arsenal with his current contract set to expire in June.
The Germany international has come in for some harsh criticism this season, with many accusing the midfielder of looking disinterested in games.
However, Gunners legend Robert Pires has rushed to the defence of the 29-year-old.
And he has claimed the former Real Madrid star is only unhappy because Arsenal failed to spend the necessary money to make the squad competitive in the summer.
Ozil is a warrior who wants to win something,” Pires told German magazine SportBild.
“To me, he seems so angry about the fact that Arsenal haven’t put together the team with which he can make a difference.
“Arsenal has spent money only for Alexander Lacazette, £52m. That is not enough to be at the top.”
However, despite the club’s frugal approach in the summer transfer market, Pires still thinks Arsene Wenger will deliver this season.
“It is incredibly hard to stay at the top in England,” he added.
“But I still believe in Arsenal and, above all, Arsene Wenger.
“I think it is right that he has extended for two years.”
Wenger penned a new two-year deal with the Gunners in the summer, keeping him at the Emirates until the end of the 2018/19 season.
