Arsene Wenger says the strong goalscoring record of Alexandre Lacazette will be “very important” for Arsenal in the 2017/18 Premier League season.

Lacazette, who joined the Gunners from Lyon this summer, scored as Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Sevilla at Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

“For a striker it’s vital,” Wenger, who saw his side lift the Emirates Cup despite defeat, told arsenal.com.

“I think he has shown some good things. He was not involved a lot because we didn’t have a lot the ball [against Sevilla], like we’re used to having, and the strikers suffer from that. Overall, what he has done is good.

“It’s his strength. He has a very strong record in scoring goals and that comes from the fact that he is in the right positions in the box and anticipates well. Overall, that is a very important quality that will be needed throughout the season.”

Lacazette will hope to make his PL debut when Arsenal host Leicester City on Friday 11 August.
