The dust from Ozil’s stunning move to Arsenal on deadline day has refused to settle. While former teammates, other players and even managers have been expressing bewilderment over the shock move, Ozil has further fanned the flame by declaring he would have even joined Arsenal for free.
In some way, that conversation flicked a switch in me and made me realise what I had lost at Madrid – transparency, trust, respect. Arsene told me exactly how he saw me, how he wanted to use me, what he expected of me. I had no control over the transfer fee. I would have even joined Arsenal for free. (Die Welt )
In the interview, he revealed a call from Wenger ignited the desire in him. He also spoke about the things he lost at Madrid prior to his Arsenal move. Transparency, trust and respect. That isn’t far fetched. When Real want to bring in a Galactico, they sacrifice a good player. His past performances don’t make sense anymore. They sacrificed Fernando Morientes for Ronaldo de Lima, also sacrificed Wesley Sneijder for Kaka and Robben for Ronaldo. With the imminent arrival of the new Galactico (Bale), they had to sacrifice another very good player and the scapegoat was Ozil.
The revelation of Ozil only gives further credence to the fact that the futures of Di Maria and Benzema might still be up in the air. Now that Isco is the beautiful bride, Di Maria will find regular football an expensive luxury and should Real armtwist Liverpool into selling them Luis Suarez (another Galactico) in the winter window, they might just leave the exit door open for Benzema and Di Maria. They are Arsenal targets and we still have money to spend which means we will be well poised to get them.
Real Madrid’s loss will be our again. The castaways from Bernabeu always hit it big somewhere else. Robben and Sneijder have been hugely successful at Bayern and Inter, I believe Ozil will tow the same path at Arsenal.
