Arsenal are desperate for significant improvements to their Premier League campaign next season after finishing outside of the Champions League spots last season for the first-time under Arsene Wenger.

Many lobbied for the long-serving French boss to vacate the Emirates Stadium after his shortcomings but FA Cup success led him to be rewarded with a new two-year deal and he’s shown his ambition in the market by securing a club-record deal for Alexandre Lacazette.

Lacazette’s arrival, alongside the free transfer of Sead Kolasinac, has improved the Gunners ranks significantly and fans are hoping to taste Premier League success for the first-time since 2004. However, some consider them to still be short compared to their rivals.

Speaking to Sky Sportsformer Arsenal star Charlie Nicholas raised his concerns about the Gunners ability to win the biggest competition in England.

“Forget the Europa League, it’s all about the Premier League and taking on the big spenders, led by Manchester City. I fear there are some way off because of the confusion at the club. Arsene Wenger used the wrong terminology when suggesting they are in an ideal situation with the contracts.”

“Wenger is caught in a difficult place because he’s such a loyal guy and, while I have no issue with him being prudent, he said he would analyse it all at the end of the campaign but he’s still not addressed the defensive issues. I stand by what I said last season, they don’t have the best XI, maybe not the best 15, but the squad is among the best around.”

Arsenal commence their new Premier League campaign a week on Friday against Leicester City, a match which follows the Community Shield clash with Chelsea at Wembley this weekend.
