Although Wenger completed the signing of Palermo’s Emiliano Viviano on a season long loan deal in the just concluded window, Arsenal are still being linked with Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes despite having three senior ‘keepers in their squad already.
Wojciech Szczesny and Lukasz Fabianski were joined by deadline day loan signing Emiliano Viviano in the goalkeeping department but still Valdes is linked with a move to the Emirates.
The Spaniard is due to leave Barcelona on a free transfer next summer with his contract expiring and despite the Catalans offering him an extension, the player has decided to look for a new challenge elsewhere.
“I have spoken with the club without problems but my choice has not changed – I am happy for this season and after, I leave.”
Many clubs expressed an interest in the goalkeeper this summer before the 32 year old decided to remain at the Nou Camp for a final year. Arsenal will no doubt have competitors for the signature of Valdes but they remain a distinct possible destination for him.
Szczesny, Arsenal’s current number one, will surely play back-up if Valdes does join the club which would leave Fabianski out in the cold and Viviano heading back to Italy.
