Arsenal are set to develop their interest in Barcelona star Javier Mascherano once the January transfer window opens according to reports in Spain. The Argentine has become a key player for the Blaugrana, filling in as a makeshift centre-back due to injury problems while being available in midfield as well.
Mascherano’s deployment in defence has reportedly unsettled the player who would like to return to his more natural midfield role but his versatility is a main factor for Arsene Wenger’s interest in him as well as the fact that he has played in the Premier League before with Liverpool. However, Arsenal are not the only club chasing him with Serie A duo Fiorentina and Napoli also monitoring his situation.
The Gunners are still short of numbers and only acquired Mathieu Flamini as a defensive midfielder despite the obvious need for another player for that position. Arsenal’s newly found wealth should mean they can afford to finance a deal for the 29-year old with a deal expected to be around £20 million.
It’s unclear whether Barcelona would be willing to sell Mascherano with Carles Puyol still hampered by injury but the Gunners managed to sign Mesut Özil for rivals Real Madrid and they could pull a similar trick to sign the South American.
