Arsene Wenger has ordered his scouts to keep a close eye on Bayer Leverkusen star Lars Bender. The Frenchman had a bid turned down for the German in the summer and is looking to make a fresh bid when the transfer window re-opens in January according to daily mirror.
Arsenal could offer as much as £25 million for the 24-year old as the club prepare to welcome another German to the club. Per Mertesacker arrived from Werder Bremen in 2011 while Lukas Podolski joined from Cologne a year later. The club’s capture of Mesut Özil on deadline day continues their trend of purchasing German players ever summer since 2011.
The club are still in need of a defensive midfielder and it’s clear that Bender remains a firm favourite with the Arsenal boss. Bayer Leverkusen refused to sell the midfielder in the summer but Arsenal are hopeful they will be able to persuade the Bundesliga outfit with a slightly higher offer than their first bid of £19 million.
The Emirates side have also been linked with Borussia Dortmund stars Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus with a mini German revolution slowly appearing under Wenger.
