Unai Emery is set for talks with Jack Wilshere this week, as the player reaches decision-making time over a new contract.
The Evening Standard report that Arsenal’s new head coach will meet with the midfielder ‘in the next few days’, to try and make a decision over his future.
Wilshere reportedly wants to stay at the club, and is willing to accept an improve three-year deal worth around £100,000-a-week. However, before he does so, he wants to know how he fits into Emery’s plans for the future. The Standard report interest from Juventus, Everton and Crystal Palace if the England international does decide to leave.
All we can hope is that Emery is completely honest with Wilshere about his role in the team. The last thing a club with a new boss needs is a player complaining about ‘broken promises’ all season because he’s not a guaranteed starter.
Personally I’m neither for nor against Wilshere signing a new deal. If he does stay, though, I want it to be because he’s willing to accept his role in the squad, not because Emery has falsely promised him he can play every week.
We need everyone on the same page for the coming season, if they’re going to reach their potential.
