For a long time, Arsenal have been heralded as a team with beautiful style but lacking in grit. To this end, Arsenal have often lost when they had their backs pegged to the wall but in recent months, the Gunners have acquired steel and even with their backs against the walls, they have won. Last season, Arsenal went on a long unbeaten run that had more wins than draws all in a bid to secure a top 4 finish that would guarantee Champions League football this season. Some of the matches saw Arsenal score early and had to spend the greater part of the game protecting the lead. That, they did successfully.
They have brought the same mentality into this season and it has gone a long way in helping them sit comfortably at the summit of the Premier League. This has led star midfielder Tomas Rosicky to hail the team’s steel.
“You can see we have added resilience,” said Rosicky.
“Against Dortmund you could see how well we played defensively. Resilience could be the difference.”
Well said Rosicky. Against Dortmund, Arsenal showed both discipline and efficiency. The former they showed in the way they handled the flurry of attacks from the home side and the latter was visible in the fact that the Gunners scored with their first shot on goal in the game. The new look Arsenal are more lethal in attack though there is still room for improvement and also show that they have learnt how to defend deeply. If we are going to win the league, we must be ready to keep this new steel.
