Arsène Wenger says his squad have the capability to go further in the League Cup this year than in previous seasons.

Wenger has won the FA Cup seven times, more than any other manager in the history of the competition. But when it comes to the League Cup, he’s still yet to lift the trophy.

The main reason for this is that Wenger has always taken the FA Cup very seriously, fielding strong teams throughout the rounds. In the League Cup, he’s generally given academy players their first senior opportunities, and once or twice it’s almost worked out.

“I always used it to give a chance to young boys. We went to the final with a very young team and nearly won it. I always focus on winning trophies in the Premier League and FA Cup domestically, and always used the League Cup as an education for our young players,” he said, reports the Express.

“But with this team I have the squad to go further. Let’s focus on winning the match against Norwich and then we’ll see where we will go.” Perhaps this year utilising the academy players could be much more of a positive thing for the side, considering some of the players coming through at the moment.

Players like Reiss Nelson are very talented and just need to get some senior experience, whilst others like Ainsley Maitland-Niles are nearing the end of their life in the academy and are ready to make the step up permanently, in my opinion.

Combine that with the fact that potential first-eleven players like Olivier Giroud, Jack Wilshere and Theo Walcott are currently helping out with the cup side, and you have a team that could do very well in the competition, provided they don’t slip up.

They navigated the match against Doncaster fairly comfortably, now it’s onto Norwich.
