Arsenal have a stronger squad than many people believe, according to Adrian Clarke.
The Gunners were undone in their first league game of the season against Aston Villa but earned some respect back with their impressive 3-0 victory away win to Fenerbahce. Despite the win, Arsene Wenger is under pressure to spend to strengthen his squad.
“Everybody knows the squad is light – there is no secret about that.”
“But the truth is Arsenal are a very strong team, they have powerful players, and they would be there or thereabouts with the squad they have. I think they will improve between now and the end of the transfer window and, once they do, they are going to be a force to be reckoned with this season. I’m still very confident.”
Clarke’s comments are not totally absurd after the club comfortably defeated a full-strength Manchester City side in pre-season. The current squad is based on quality players but injuries and a lack of squad-depth are damaging the squad. They need to improve defensively but more tactically than individually.
An out and out goalscorer who can covert all the chances Arsenal create in a game and a strong defensive midfielder are the only additions Arsenal are in desperate need of. Another defender and midfielder to add numbers to the squad will give the team a good balance.
When Arsenal have a fully fit squad to choose from, they can be a match for anyone.
