Arsenal look to have made their first telling contribution in the transfer market in the shape of Brazil midfielder Bernard. The 20-year has attracted interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and FC Porto but is set for a move to the Gunners.
Alexandre Oliviera, a Brazilian reporter, broke the news to ESPN with a deal of £21 million agreed. The Brazil international announced he could be leaving Atletico Mineiro shortly before their 2-0 first leg defeat to Olimpia.
The Gunners have mainly been focusing on brining in a striker with Luis Suarez, Wayne Rooney and Gonzalo Higuain at the forefront on the club’s transfer business but have had no luck. It’s no secret that Arsene Wenger wants to strengthen his midfield too with defensive and attacking reinforcements. Bernard could be the attacking midfielder they crave.
He is blessed with pace and fantastic control. His vision is frightening and he has the execution alongside it. He is a good passer of the ball and has goals in his locker too. He has just started playing for the Brazilian national team and was part of the successful Confederations Cup squad.
Arsenal’s offer of Champions League football gives them a huge advantage over Liverpool and Spurs. The Premier League is the most coveted league in the world so naturally; they sit ahead of FC Porto too.
No official word has come from Atletico Mineiro or Arsenal while Wenger went as far as saying the club were not close to any transfers yesterday. However their offer for Bernard is added with the possible £40 million offer for Liverpool striker Luis Suarez as Arsenal look to close in on their transfer targets.
