Sky Sports News is today reporting that Fulham are interested in signing Arsenal’s Calum Chambers.

Difficult time at Arsenal

Chambers began his career at Southampton, for whom he made 25 first team appearances.

The defender would then move to Arsenal in 2014 for a fee in the region of £14 million. But while at Arsenal Chambers has struggled for regular first-team football.

Chambers did enjoy a successful loan spell at Middlesbrough in the 2016/17 season, though.

The Englishman made 26 appearances for Boro and formed a solid partnership with Ben Gibson.

And, despite Middlesbrough being relegated that season, their defence was excellent for a team who finished in the bottom three.

Before Aitor Karanka was sacked in March of 2017, Middlesbrough had the best defence in the league outside the top six teams and Chambers was a big reason why.

Despite his excellent season at Middlesbrough, Chambers has still been unable to cement a first-team spot at Arsenal.

Chambers made just 12 Premier League appearances last season for the Gunners and, with a new boss now in charge, Chambers’ future is very much up in the air, meaning a decent bid from Fulham could well see Chambers leaving Arsenal this summer.

Play-off winners

Fulham enjoyed a very impressive 2017/18 Championship campaign. They finished 3rd in the Championship and scored a superb 79 goals in 46 league games. Only league winners Wolves managed more.

As a result of finishing 3rd Fulham earned themselves a playoff spot. They would beat Derby County 2-1 over two legs of the semi-final and they would go on to beat Aston Villa 1-0 in the final.

Now that Fulham have returned to the top flight of English football for the first time in four years, they are looking to improve upon their squad in order to survive the upcoming season and Chambers could prove to be a key addition.
