The last 24 hours have seen the Aubameyang transfer saga reach its climax, as the BBC and other reputable news outlets broke the news that a deal has been agreed for the frontman. The reported fee appears slightly lower than expected, between £53m – £60m ( skysports and BBC are reporting £60m), and the figure represents somewhat of a coup for the Gunners. This notion is only furthered when put into perspective with other transfers of similar figures. And judging by various reports, there is a chance Aubameyang could be announced today. According to some reports, the deal was to be announced yesterday but has that didn’t happen, my guess is that it will be today.
The likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson, Kyle Walker and Virgil Van Dijk have all moved for sums in the same ball park as is being quoted for Aubameyang, and the latter appears to represent to best value for money. After all, we are talking about an impact player. The type who can singlehandedly win games, and notched up 31 league goals in nearly as many games last season.
Arsenal fans would no doubt have feared the worst, as the Bundesliga team sheets broke on Saturday afternoon with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang starting for Borussia Dortmund. However, in an unusual turn of events, this act of defiance from the German club, may have done them little good.
Aubameyang stuck out like a sore thumb as the only player on the pitch who wasn’t really that engaged, in what was an extremely exciting clash. This will have had only one impact on those associated with Dortmund – instilled the stark realisation that the Gabonese international needed to be moved on. Meanwhile BVB’s loss is Arsenal’s gain, as they acquire a target, who may have cost a few bucks more had he put in a stellar performance on Saturday.
