Arsene Wenger has reiterated his commitment to building squad for Arsenal that is mixed with experience and youth.
According to reports by Sky Sports, Arsenal centre back Per Mertesacker is close to signing a new contract with the club.
Mertesacker has an option to extend his current Arsenal contract and the Gunners are close to activating it.
Due to an injury he sustained before the start of the season, the Germany international is yet to lace his boots for Arsenal this term.
He has been at Arsenal since 2011 and has made 149 appearances in the Premier League.
He has returned to training but is still not ready to return to the first-team squad.
Mertesacker will struggle to get back into the Arsenal team when he is fully fit.
Shkodran Mustafi signed for Arsenal after Mertesacker’s injury and is yet to lose in his first 20 games for the club.
Mustafi has built a successful partnership with Laurent Koscielny, with Gabriel and Rob Holding filling in when they’re unavailable.
