Arsene Wenger has revealed that he wanted Diego Costa but he wasn’t aware Athletico Madrid would allow the player to leave as at that time.
Costa agreed a switch to the Blues two years ago and fired Chelsea to Premier League glory in his first season with 20 goals in 26 league appearances.
Since moving to the English game, the Brazilian-born Spaniard has been a thorn in Arsenal’s side with the forward netting twice in three matches against them, as well as involving himself in famous rows with the likes of Gabriel Paulista.
Arsenal face Chelsea on Saturday evening and, ahead of that contest, Wenger has confessed he regrets not knowing that there was a chance the player could leave Atletico in 2014.
The Frenchman insists he would have stepped up hdis interest in rivalling Chelsea to sign the striker from the Spanish side had he been aware of his availability.
“I never thought he would leave Atlético Madrid at the time, I was surprised,” said the Frenchman.
“Would I have made a harder play for him had I known? Yes. I like him, as a quality striker.
