Arsenal have been reportedly linked with a move for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk this summer.
The Sun reported last week that Arsene Wenger is keen to sign the Dutch defender, given that Per Mertesacker is set to retire next summer.
Premier League rivals Liverpool tried to sign the 26-year-old earlier this season, but they were forced to back off from the race and issue an apology to Southampton over their aggressive transfer tactics.
Van Dijk has established himself as one of the most consistent performers in the Premier League since joining the Saints from Celtic in 2015.
He won’t come cheap, and Southampton are expected to demand a fee, as reported by The Mirror, in the region of £60 million.
Arsenal, who have recently splashed £52 million on Alexandre Lacazette, should make a statement by making another big money move for the Dutchman.
The Gunners have the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Shkodran Mustafi, Gabriel, and Rob Holding in their side – but Arsene Wenger surely can make room for a top-class player in the side.
Koscielny will turn 32 in September and the Gunners should consider planning a long-term replacement for him from now on.
Van Dijk will be a terrific addition for the Gunners, one who could add immense quality to the side. He is at the peak of his career, and players like him will make Arsenal a genuine title contenders next season.
