Sensational reports in the Italian media today claim Javier Mascherano has agreed terms in principle to join Juventus this summer. The former Liverpool star is said to be ready to leave Barca this summer and will want to join Juventus should the Italian club be able to convince Barca to sell the player.
Reports claim Arsenal are working on hijacking the move. He is very versatile and though predominantly a defensive midfielder, he has played more often in the centre back position for Barca without complaining.
Although we no longer need a defensive midfielder after signing Granit Xhaka, we could however do with the signing of another centre back and with reports claiming Chamberlain and Ramsey will be leaving this summer, signing Mascherano will be a double edged sword. By signing the Argentine, we will have a reliable partner for Lauren Koscienly and another option in the defensive midfield role.
His experience in the game will go a long way to helping Arsenal’s young midfielders. The fact that he is already 31 makes it even better. He will only be around two maybe three years and his wage demands aren’t that crazy. He will be a good short term fix as there are not many quality centre backs available in the market at the moment.
