For the first time in a long while, Arsenal have depth in squad and it is looking like we will be able to fight for the title this season.
Former Birmingham and Sunderland defender Cunningham hasn’t been impressed with Mustafi’s start to life as an Arsenal player ahead of Saturday’s trip to Hull City.
Mustafi has starred for Arsenal in three games since moving but it was his latest performance against Hull City that was somewhat above average. He was unconvincing against Southampton and Paris Saint Germain.
“It was a calculated risk when you bring in a defender from abroad,” Cunningham told Irish radio station Newstalk.
“Mustafi forged a very good partnership with Otamendi at Valencia. The demands of Premier League can’t be underestimated.
“It has been a mixed bag from him. He doesn’t have too many outstanding attributes.
“He isn’t totally dominant in the air, he isn’t a running machine and he isn’t totally comfortable with the ball at his feet. It will take a bit of time.”
But what do you expect from a player who joined a club at the close of the transfer window, who did not have a pre-season game? Not much I guess.
Arsenal have conceded seven times in four Premier League games so far this season in the absence of injury duo Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista.
