Arsene Wenger plans to sign Aleksandr Golovin upon his return to club management, according to the FIFA agent Sandor Varga. The 22-year-old playmaker was heavily linked with a transfer to Arsenal last summer but a move failed to materialise. Wenger highlighted the CSKA’ star as his side’s main threat when the Gunners faced the Russian side in last season’s Europa League quarter final, after which Wenger again singled out Golovin for praise following his superb free kick in a 5-1 defeat.
Reports in Russia on Thursday claimed Unai Emery had sanctioned a bid for Golovin having consulted the scouting reports compiled during Wenger’s tenure, but the player’s representative insists Wenger still has designs on his client. Asked about the possibility of Golovin moving to Chelsea to work under their likely new manager Maurizio Sarri, Varga said: ‘I can say the same about Wenger. ‘I asked Arsene about Golovin, the Frenchman said: ‘I do not know what Arsenal will do, but I’ll take him for myself’.
Arsene wants to work. While there is no certainty, we negotiated with two clubs, but did not come to an agreement. ‘But if Wenger takes [charge of] any team, Golovin will have another option.’ Emery has so far focused his efforts on strengthening the defence and midfield he inherited from Wenger, with experienced right-back Stephan Lichsteiner having arrived on a free transfer from Juventus, while goalkeeper Bernd Leno’s move from Bayer Leverkusen was confirmed earlier this week.
