Robin Van Persie has welcomed Manchester United’s move for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas. The duo spent 7 seasons together at Arsenal before Fabregas left for Barcelona in 2011, with Van Persie switching to Manchester United last summer.
Speaking after United’s 5-1 pre-season victory over A-League All Stars, where Van Persie found the net, the striker spoke of his delight that the club were after the former Arsenal captain saying “Of course, he’s a great player.”
David Moyes has identified the midfield as the position he would most like to strengthen and saw a move for Thiago Alcantara knocked back before a bid of £25 million was rejected for Fabregas. The club lodged an improved £30 million plus add-ons deal, which is yet to be answered, however Barcelona have insisted Fabregas will stay at the club therefore it is expected to be rejected.
Friends close to the midfielder have said the player will not move anywhere but to Arsenal should he leave Barcelona. He still has emotional connections to the club having spent 8 seasons there and regards Arsene Wenger as a father figure.
Moyes however, remains confident he can lure Fabregas to Old Trafford to ensure they defend their Premier League title successfully.
Arsenal are believed to have first refusal on the player which has agreed as part of his transfer to the Catalans which would scupper Moyes’ plans as Wenger would act on that if he was told the player was available.
So far, Wenger has left Fabregas alone with the knowledge that he will remain at Barcelona but should he leave, then Arsenal would be the most likely destination.
