Robert Pires has heaped praise on Arsenal summer signing Lucas Torreira, calling the Uruguayan midfielder a ‘warrior’. The Gunners signed Torreira, 22, from Italian club Sampdoria in the summer for around £26million. Having initially been restricted to substitute appearances, Torreira has recently become a regular starter for Arsenal boss Unai Emery. And Gunners legend Pires says he ‘loves’ the midfielder and understands why Arsenal spent so much to secure his signature.
I love Lucas Torreira,’ said Pires, who won two Premier League titles under Arsene Wenger. ‘When you play in his position you need to be a warrior, and he’s a warrior. ‘He likes to fight a good fight with the other players and technically he’s very good. ‘He has good ability with the ball, good vision and now I understand why Arsenal paid a lot of money for him. He’s a very good player.’
After a difficult start to the new season, Arsenal have won seven consecutive matches in all competitions. The north London outfit are currently fifth in the Premier League – level on points with fourth-placed Tottenham – and top of their Europa League group. Asked whether he wants Arsenal to focus on the Europa League or finishing in the top four of the Premier League, Pires added: ‘Why not both? ‘Arsenal have spent a lot of money this summer and I think they can compete in the Premier League and in the Europa League.
