FORMER Manchester United defender-turned BT Sport pundit Rio Ferdinand has slammed Arsene Wenger for one transfer mishap.
The Gunners had a busy January as they signed Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, from Man Utd and Borussia Dortmund respectively.
However, they lost Olivier Giroud to Chelsea while United signed Alexis Sanchez.
But Ferdinand thought Arsenal made the right decision on all of those deals, but there was one which really ground his gears.
The inability to sign an additional defender frustrated Ferdinand and he thinks it could end up costing the Gunners come the end of the season.
The north London club had tracked West Brom’s Jonny Evans all month but retracted their interest after West Brom refused to drop their valuation.
“I still think their achilles heal is defensively,” Ferdinand told BT Sport.
“For the life of me I can’t believe he has not gone on to sign a centre-half.
“There were rumours that he tried to get Jonny Evans late in the transfer window.
“[Alan] Pardew said to him ‘come to me early and I’ll have a better answer for you’ but Arsene Wenger obviously didn’t see that one.”
Instead, Arsenal must now try to compete for the Champions League places with the same back line.
There was a late rumour they were closing in on Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas but the switch never materialised.
