Arsene Wenger is plotting a shock double raid on Real Madrid duo Karim Benzema & Raphael Varane. The French manager is in need of a defender & a forward and has identified the French pair as his preferred targets.
The club managed to sign Mesut Özil from the Spanish club in January and Wenger is keen to go back to try and lure even more talent from the Spanish capital. There had been reports that a £22 million deal for Benzema was close to completion with Olivier Giroud needing a partner to help share the burden of leading Arsenal’s attack. Nicklas Bendtner has acquired the role of back-up forward but he hasn’t shown any quality in his appearances.
The rumours regarding Varane are more intriguing. The youngster is held in high regard at the Bernabeu and it will take a huge sum to persuade Carlo Ancelotti to part with the centre-back. The form of Laurent Koscielny & Per Mertesacker sees no desperate need for a centre half but the uncertain future of Thomas Vermaelen means a back-up player may be needed.
Arsenal have been linked with a whole host of players including Luis Suarez, Alexandre Pato & Ignazio Abate but Wenger revealed he may not spend in January with his squad big enough to cope. Theo Walcott & Lukas Podolski’s return to fitness will help aid Giroud with Vermaelen’s recent desire to stay helping keep the defence depth strong.
