Napoli is set to try to lure England winger Theo Walcott to Italy this summer. New manager Rafael Benitez has always been a keen admirer of the Arsenal star and has labeled him as his number one transfer target.
Benitez tried to sign the winger while he was manager at Liverpool and was also linked with a move for the player earlier in the year while at Chelsea when the player was undergoing contract talks with the Gunners. However, the player signed a three and a half year deal that made him the club’s highest paid player.
Despite that, Benitez feels he can still get the player as he starts a new era at the club. The Italian club sold one part of their incredible ‘trio’ when they allowed Ezequiel Lavezzi to join mega-rich Paris Saint Germain last summer and are resigned to losing a second member with Edinson Cavani interesting Manchester City and Chelsea with a deal of at least £50 million, all of which would go in to the squad’s re-investment allowing Benitez to make a move to Walcott. The good news for Napoli fans is that the third and final trio member, Marek Hamsik, has stated he is happy to stay with Napoli.
Arsenal are going through a good part of financial form too with the club armed with at least £70 million and with the promise that selling their star players are a thing of the past. The sales of Robin Van Persie and Samir Nasri were due to contract expirations while Cesc Fabregas’ departure to Barcelona was a rare occurrence with the player wanting to go back ‘home’.
Theo Walcott still has three years left on his current deal and it would take a significant bid to persuade Wenger to let one of his prized assets go. The former Saints star notched 21 goals in his best scoring season and is an integral part of the club’s rebuilding phase. Bacary Sagna could be the only big player to leave the Emirates with his contract expiring next summer; PSG and Monaco have expressed interest in the French defender.
