Arsenal forward Alex Iwobi has admitted he was shocked by Arsene Wenger’s exit, but is ready for the next chapter of his career.
The Gunners star is preparing for the World Cup with Nigeria and is still yet to meet new boss Unai Emery.
Next season Iwobi will be hoping to improve on his three goals and assisted five in 26 Premier League games from 2017/18.
Arsene Wenger gave the Nigerian his debut in 2015 and Iwobi says he was surprised to see the Gunners boss step down last month.
“I was surprised by his [Wenger’s] decision,” he said in the matchday programme for Nigeria’s clash with England on Saturday (via The Mirror)
“[Wenger] has been there for me since I joined the club and has been very inspirational and influential on my career, but I am excited having our new manager next season. It has always been my childhood dream [to play for Arsenal]. I have been playing for Arsenal since I was six.
“The fact I am representing them now is like a dream come true. I am always proud to wear the Arsenal colours, and long may it continue.”
Emery is already working on bolstering his new side. The Gunners are reportedly finalising deals for Sokratis Papastathopolous and Stephan Lichsteiner, while Marouane Fellaini could also be heading to north London.
Iwobi will be hoping to return to the Emirates after a successful campaign with Nigeria. The 22 year-old scored in the 2-1 defeat against the Three Lions on Saturday.
